Delaware Hispanic Commission forms Delaware for Puerto Rico subcommittee
The Delaware Hispanic Commission is proud to announce a campaign to raise awareness and funds for Puerto Rico, focused on the following initiatives:
- Fundraising to cover costs of containers of items donated as part of the community efforts local Delawareans began immediately after Hurricane Maria
- Fundraising to assist our “adopt a school” program with Escuela Petra Roman Vigo, El Barrio San Anton De Carolina, a school in an impoverished town in need of assistance with damage sustained in the hurricane
- Identifying additional needs of those directly affected by Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico
“Puerto Rico is in desperate need of help from the United States after devastating Hurricane Maria crippled the island. We have developed this task force committee to help identify immediate needs and ensure that resources are directed where they are most needed,” said Javier G. Torrijos, chair of the Delaware Hispanic Commission.
Delaware for Puerto Rico consists of community organizations working with the governor’s office and state agencies to provide assistance to Puerto Rico.
In support of the National Puerto Rican Agenda (NPR), the Delaware Hispanic Commission supports and encourages all registered and unregistered individuals to visit the link for NPR — www.puertoricanagenda.com — for additional information. The commission encourages advocacy to meet the urgent and immediate needs of Puerto Rico and those impacted by the recent hurricanes.
“I urge all Delawareans to help with generous financial donations to help our fellow Puerto Rican U.S. citizens rebuild. Your help is very much appreciated, and I know that Delawareans will continue to contribute to make sure that their needs are met in these difficult times,” Torrijos said.
The Delaware Hispanic Commission, whose members are appointed by the governor, meets bimonthly to discuss and look for opportunities to address the most important needs of the First State’s rapidly growing Latino families.
“We have the opportunity within our state and community to make a marked difference in the lives of those who are in dire need of assistance, and we are hopeful that we can depend upon the continued kindness of our fellow Delawareans,” said Laura Gendreau, Delaware for Puerto Rico chair.
